The language of reflection
Writing reflectively requires command of a particular style of writing, which is in some ways different from the style of writing you will be asked to use in other critical essays.
Reflection
What do you notice about the type of language used in the reflections you have studied in the previous section?
Discussion of reflective language analysis
Reflective writing is characterised by a number of features:
â¢A range of tenses, eg the past tense (simple, continuous, perfect) to describe the incident or experience (âI spent most of the timeâ; âthis unnerved meâ; âshe had been self-harmingâ); the present tense (simple, continuous, perfect) to describe current feelings and beliefs (âI prefer working with younger childrenâ; âIâm thinking about havingâ; âI have realisedâ); the future tense to describe planned action (âI think Iâll beâ; âIâm going to contactâ);
â¢A slightly conversational tone (âI wasnât really looking forward toâ; âshe had just âlost itââ);
â¢The first person pronoun (âmy first placementâ; âI started to read around the topicâ);
â¢Words and phrases connected to different aspects of reflection as outlined in the various models (see the next task).
